The term "blue baby" is applied to a newborn born with a circulatory problem that results in a cyanotic blue coloration to the skin. This can be a sign that brain or organ damage may occur and is a life-threatening situation.

Identified causes include

-- congenital heart defects (tetralogy of fallot, persistent truncus arteriosis, vessel transposition, missing valve)

-- constriction of the pulmonary arteries
