Bar Mitzvah gifts are not important at all. They serve to show the boy that he is loved (or girl, if it's a bat mitzvah), but they are optional.

Gifts are only of minor importance at certain Jewish ceremonies, such as a bar mitzvah or a wedding. They are meant to show love and honor, but they are completely optional.

Why do you get presents for bar and bat mitzvah?

There is no historical tradition of gift giving during Channukah so you do not have to give or get presents. The practice of gift giving during Channukah is mainly specific to the US and Canada and is the result of the holiday falling in the same month as Christmas.

A Jewish boy becomes a bar mitzvah on his 13th birthday. This does not require a formal ceremony. The ceremony people are most familiar with is to celebrate the boy becoming a bar mitzvah, it doesn't make him one.

What does the bar mitzvah boy do before his ceremony?

He often gets called up to read from the Torah in front of the synagogue congregation. Really, though, becoming Bar Mitzvah happens regardless of what one does. It simply means becoming an adult and becoming responsible for one's actions. A Jewish boy becomes Bar Mitzvah when he turns 13.

When was Ben Stiller's bar mitzvah?

Boys become Bar Mitzvah at the age of 13, so we can assume that Ben had his ceremony in either 1978 or 1979 as he was born on the 30th of November 1965.

What is the meaning of 'Bar Mitzvah?

Bar means son in Hebrew. Mitzvah means commandment. Noun pairs such as this usually have an implied of between the nouns, so bar mitzvah means literally a son of a commandment. So much for the literal. Culturally, the term is used to identify the point in the life of a son when that son takes on adult responsibility for his own actions. (The corresponding term for a girl is a bat mitzvah). This is considered a big thing. Pre bar mitzvah, the parents are responsible. Post bar mitzvah, the son is responsible. With responsibility comes the ability to lead communal prayers and be counted toward the quorum of 10 required to hold a communal worship service, so it's traditional to celebrate.

Why is a bar or bat mitzvah special to judaism?

Bar is Aramaic for 'son'. Bat is Hebrew for 'daughter'. When a boy turns 13 and a girl turns 12, they are considered adults in the eyes of Judaism. This means that they are now responsible for taking on the religious responsibilities of adult Jews - fasting, being counted for community prayers, etc.

Why do bar mitzvah's have to be so costly?

They don't. The actual ceremony price can be determined by your synagogue of choice. I believe Chabad will provide free ceremonies, but you will probably have to donate. The party aspect of the Bar Mitzvah is unnecessary however.
