∙ 13y agoBells are used to remind people that something special is happening at the Eucharist when the bread and wine are to become the body and blood of Christ. In the old days they were rung from the bell tower so people outside could hear them; now it is done in the sanctuary up to three times - at the Eucharist prayer sending down the Spirit, then at the elevation of the bread and then the wine.
Also, bells are rung at the Gloria on Holy Thursday and Easter Vigil, as a sound of joy.
