Most cities are located near bodies of water because during the colonization period of most societies water allowed trade amongst civilizations to be easier and quicker. It is much more efficient to take the goods you have produced and ship them down stream than haul them across land and have to overcome barriers that may get in your way.

that's were the best plumming is, so more shops xan be built close together, its easier to build towns and citys near waterway ect more money, food, buisness so importing and stuff

Most population is congregated around water because of we life itself lives from drinking, power ( hydro dams) , and food (fish, shellfish,etc.)
