The tracks have more surface area. That provides better weight distribution and less sinking in the mud.
On level terrain (such as a paved road) wheels with tires would be faster; on uneven terrain caterpiller tracks are faster. That assumes equal horsepower in either case.
Because it was hard to listen to lp's while driving down the road, and they sounded better than 8-tracks.
Study the ground for tracks.
Yes, all animals that walk on the ground leave tracks behind.
This depends on what you plan to do with it. If you plan to do all off-roading (or close to it) a Truck will probably work better if the terrain is difficult and requires it to be lifted of the ground. A trucks advantages don't transfer over to road tracks to well. They are also good if you have long grass. An RC buggy is better if your doing a mixture of off road tracks, and road tracks. Buggy's sit rather close to the ground so cant go over large 'bumps'. They can easily do jumps though with a reasonably smooth surface. Long grass will stop them in there tracks though (in fact it doesn't have to be so long because there close to the ground). There advantages do cross over to a road track better than trucks though. I like Buggy's better for most tasks.
They're 'ballast' - something solid to stop the tracks sinking into the ground.
tires
Ground pressure. Tracks distribute the weight over a much larger area, making them less prone to sink into the ground.
With tracks by far. They are superior to tires for traction.
Rubber tracks are used on certain types of construction equipment so that they cause less damage to the ground when they move.
The tracks have a larger coefficient of linear expansion than the ground beneath.
