Why are ciruit boads green?

Circuit boards are usually coated with a "solder mask", which prevents the solder from adhering to places where it is not desired. It also prevents corrosion of the traces on the board.

The solder mask is typically made of epoxy, and is tinted green so that it can be seen easily in a visual inspection against the copper traces. Occasionally, other colors can be found.
