Because they are in the Caribbean Sea. This Sea is surrounded on three sides by the North coast of South America, the south coast of North America, Central America (the strip of land connecting North and South America), and on the fourth side by the islands of the west Indies. It's like calling Guernsey and Jersey the 'Channel Islands' : they are located in the English Channel. (A real estate agent would say "The three most important things are: Location, location, and location" and then sell them!)
