Air rises at the equator, carrying with it moisture from the tropics. The moisture falls as rain between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. The dry, heavy air then sinks around 30 degrees north and south. Dry sinking air suppresses the formation of rain storms and deserts form.

Deserts often occur on the side of a mountain range that blocks the prevailing winds. For example in U.S. because its in northern hemisphere has westerly winds. Moisture blows from off the ocean and is blocked by mountains and so deserts exist behind the mountain where the moisture doesn't reach.
