When a female dog goes into heat, her genital area will swell up and she will bleed. The swelling is getting ready to breed with a male. When she stops bleeding, she will still be swollen, and then she is ready for a male to breed with. The swelling is to make it more comfortable to breed, otherwise their genital area is very small.
