In Greek mythology there was a nymph called "Echo" who was one of Hera's servants. Echo was very talkative and so Hera cast a spell on her that only allowed her to repeat things that other people said (this is one version of the story).

Echo is most known for her role in the story of Narcissus. He was a handsome boy who was the son of a god. Out on a hunt one day he stumbled across his reflection in a pool and was overcome with love for it. He bent down and positioned himself so he could gaze into the pond at his reflection forever. Echo had been watching Narcissus and she fell in love with him. He said to his reflection, "I love you," and Echo repeated it, but Narcissus just thought that his reflection was speaking to him. The story goes on and on in which Narcissus says things to his reflection and Echo repeats them, but he never pays her any attention.

As the story goes, Narcissus either watches his reflection until he fades away and Hermes takes him to the land of the dead, or in some versions of the myth he tries to kiss his reflection but falls into the pond and drowns. Echo grows sad and retreats to a cave where she withers away herself, and all that is left of her is her voice (which resides in certain hollow places), which will repeat the words of others but have none of its own.

If you are referring to greek mythology then it is because of the wood nymph Echo. Echo worked for Zeus to distract Hera when he went off with other nymphs. After Hera found out about what Echo was doing she cursed her so she could only repeat what someone said.
