Siren-wise, there is a variety. Just some of the different sirens may include:
•Wail, the long sounding one
•Q-sirens, The old sounding long ones. These were featured on some of the very early fire engines that had sirens, and many fire apparatus' today will have remakes of this siren which sound similar but are different in ways.
•Yelp, the one that is stereotypically given to police cars. This one is a kind-of faster/shorter one.
•Hyper-yelp/Priority/Phaser, this one is the one stereotypically given to ambulances. It is the fast ("Hyper") version of the Yelp siren.
•Hi-Lo, this one is the Two Tone siren, which sounds very similar to a British Siren.
•Air Horn, although not a siren this sound is the very loud horn or either the electric sounding horn on apparatus. This is frequently heard in-between sirens. This is commonly used along with the different sirens when approaching intersections or traffic.
•And there are a few others, and also some these can have different names.
So that when the police are trying to catch a speeder or a rushing to a crime scene, people who are driving know to make way for the police so they can get there as fast as possible.
