A simple reason: Flowers attract the pollinators that plants need to live and reproduce. A more complex answer: Flowers are the most beautiful way to express one's feelings, their fragrance and colour brings a sense of freshness and beauty in the life of our loved ones. The gifts presented in the form of flowers are the best gifts ever given to someone. Though, flowers cannot be stored for life time, but gifts in the form of flowers are the most precious gift, memories of which always remain in the heart of the person forever. Flowers are mainly sent to the special ones, to mark the importance of the occasion. Birthdays, marriages, anniversaries, etc are the events on which we generally convey our good wishes through flowers. This is because, flowers connect directly to nature and by looking at them, one feels a sense of contentment and compassion in himself, which in turn leads to reduction of worries and anxiety.

Flowers constitute an important article of worship. The image in the sanctum is decorated with garlands flowers and with unstrung flowers. The flowers are offered to the deity at in worship. Flowers gladden the heart and mind; and confer prosperity. Flowers offered with devotion gratify the Lord. The devotees who visit the Gurudwara also offer flowers as token of love and devotion.

A child would answer, "Because they are pretty and so I can give them to my Mom."
A religious person might say that flowers are God's gifts of beauty and that flowers remind us of beauty in the world.
A scientist would probably explain how pollination occurs and explain how important bees are to the existence of all flowering plants.
Botanists would likely explain that planting certain flowers alongside or near food crops to bring bees and, thus, enhance pollination of food crops.
Horticulturists simply enjoy all types of flowering and nonflowering plants. They could tell you of the hundreds of different types within the same group of plants.
A philosopher might intertwine ideas about (1) how people throughout the ages have always liked to adorn themselves with plant and flower dyes (the beginnings of tattoo's; (2) children like to make "flower necklaces" to wear or give as presents (3) and adults like to give and receive flower arrangements.
Allergy sufferers would say flowers are just a source of misery, with a myriad of physical symptoms, creating the need for medications and precautions during allergy seasons.
Gardeners would simply say they enjoy working with the soil amidst bursts of colors and different types of flowers.
Flowers provide many things to humans:

  1. enrichment of our visual and olfactory senses
  2. a source to draw upon faith and religion -- that all things have a "season" -- that all things are under the "universe's" control -- that all things have a cycle from germinating, to first unseen growth, to sprouting shoots, to creating buds, to full blooming, to death (returning eventually to germinating for some types, such as perennial bulbs)
  3. enrichment of the mind as botanists and horticulturists classify types and experiment with creating new specimens
  4. creation of hobbies for many different kinds of hobbyists
  5. provide "beautification" to towns, cities, suburbs, and urban areas
  6. provide woodland scenery and food sources for some animals
  7. Etc., Etc.
