When the glaciers were retreating from southern areas and moved backwards, large pieces of ice (bigger than a large iceberg) were left behind. The melt waters from further north flowed around them. There were boulders, gravel and sand in that water. This was left around the "bergs" and when that ice melted a deep area was left. The high areas are called moraines and the deep areas are are called kettles. There are lakes that fill these kettles now. Some are very large and very deep. Many of the moraines are mined for the gravel and sand.
