All creatures are designed to work in harmony with their environment. For most animals, this adaptation is to "blend in" with the environment. The lion is the color of soil in it's native habitat. It is a protection and camouflage for the lion.

While the lion is a predator, it also is not highly active like some other animals. Therefore it needs the protective coloring of it's surroundings so that the pride (the name of a bunch of lions) will not be as easily detected.

Lions have a tawny brown coloration as a form of camouflage to blend in with their savanna habitat, making it easier for them to sneak up on their prey. This color also helps them to hide in tall grass and avoid detection by other predators when hunting or resting.
