The intention of the Founding Fathers to have federal judges appointed was to isolate the individuals from the political sphere of influence. By doing so, federal judges are less pressured to make decisions based on gaining more voting support for a hypothetical re-election, and more pressured to make decisions on the basis of the law.

Likewise, federal judges are appointed for life to allow as much consistency in rulings and decisions as possible.
