Miracles demonstrate the power of God and His existence, fulfill His purposes, and assist people in need.

Answer:

Miracles can be of the false, misleading variety, too... besides the miracles of Christ, God's prophets, etc..

"...I saw another Beast come up out of the earth... He did astounding MIRACLES, such as making fire flash down to earth from heaven while everyone was watching. And with all the miracles he was allowed to perform on behalf of the First Beast, HE DECEIVED ALL THE PEOPLE who belong in this world..." (Rev.13:11-14 NLT New Living Translation)

So, the reason why miracles are performed is to INSTILL BELIEF in people!

"This miraculous sign at Cana... was Jesus' first display of His Glory. And HIS DISCIPLES BELIEVED IN HIM." (John 2:11 NLT)

"...After He was raised from the dead, the disciples remembered that He had said this. And THEY BELIEVED BOTH JESUS AND THE SCRIPTURES. Because of the miraculous signs He did in Jerusalem... many people WERE CONVINCED that He was indeed the Messiah. But Jesus didn't trust them, because He knew what people were really like. No one needed to tell Him about human nature." (verses 22-25)

Miracles are "physical acts and displays" received and witnessed by one or more of our five "physical senses" [physical data input]... which in turn causes a REACTION in our mind of a "spiritual" nature; called "belief."

And "believing" something doesn't necessarily make it True.

"This evil man to come to do the work of Satan with counterfeit power and signs and MIRACLES. He will use every kind of wicked deception to fool those who are on their way to destruction because they REFUSE TO BELIEVE the Truth that would save them. So God will send great deception upon them, and THEY WILL BELIEVE ALL THESE LIES." (II Thess.2:9-11 NLT)

Miracles are performed to instill belief.

How many miracles did Peter perform?

If you are talking about miracles in the biblical sense, then Peter performed no miracles. The fact is: no apostle or human being has ever performed, or can everperform a miracle. Miracles can be performed throughhuman beings but miracles cannot be performed byhuman beings. All such biblical type miracles which have been performed in the past - and which are performed in the present - through human beings derive from spirit (or God as Christians prefer) and from the power which derives from the spirit. It is the Father (or spirit) working through the human being that doeth the work of creating the miracle or spiritual phenomenon.
