Monsters aren't universally hated, but the reason for a lot of the hate is the same reason as for any hate... we don't understand things that are different than we are, which often leads to fear and distaste. Monsters, like insects in some ways, freak us out because they look scary to us, and we don't understand how they think or why they are the way they are. The book Frankenstein, Xenocide, or even The Monster at the End of This Book, are attempts by people to help us understand the strange, the other... trying to help us realize that we are strange monsters in our own way as well, and that we can learn to treat each other better.
