The detergent in the shampoo removes the dirt and oils in your hair without leaving behind soap scum.
Soap is sodium or potassium salts of fatty acids, and these days is usually used only for cleaning human skin, but in the past was used for many other cleaning purposes. Detergent is a substance used for cleaning, so soap is a type of detergent. Detergents are often surfactants (as is soap), which help to dissolve oils in water, useful in cleaning dirty dishes or greasy skin. Both detergent and soap can be harmful to skin (but are not always), and neither form kill or remove 100% of bacteria.
Soaps are made from natural fats and oils and so are fully biodegradable. Detergents on the other hand are made from synthetic chemicals. These chemicals do not break down in the environment, and so they cause huge amount of pollution in our water ways- killing fish and water plants. This is due to the fact that detergents often contain phospahte salts that excelerate the growth of algae that deplete the oxygen content of the water. Detergents are often preferred over soap as they are more effective at cleaning and have a wider range of uses.
Antibacterial soaps contain Triclosan, a water soluble organic compound that has shown to have anti bacterial properties. Regular soaps are just a mixture of fatty acids, oils, or detergents. All natural soaps usually boast that they are made of "natural ingredients" and do not contain harsh detergents or synthetic ingredients like perfume. Most often, antibacterial soaps are not necessary to kill germs , as regular soap has been shown to kill just as many germs with thorough washing. Antibacterial soaps can be bad for the environment. Triclosan can not be "rid" during water treatment filtration processes, so it usually ends up in local streams where it can have devastating effects on aquatic life.
Solid detergents are in cardboard box, liquid detergents are in PE or PET bottles.
Detergent is a substance based on petroleum products. Soap is a waxy solid made from sodium hydroxide mixed with fats. The principal difference between soaps and detergents are in their composition. Soaps, on the whole, are made of materials found in nature, and detergents are labeled synthetic (although some of their ingredients are natural). Posted by Denise M. from GoPlanetEarth.com Detergents are human-made while soaps are produced naturally.

There are a number of different formulations of soaps, but in essence they are made by combining fat with some alkaline chemical. Lye soap (which is rather harsh) is made using sodium hydroxide, NaOH, mixed with fat.
