I would say this is more an anomaly to your area; dependent upon which region of the US you are referring to... In the SouthEast Oaks grow almost everywhere. If you are observing more oaks around rivers its probably because noone has clear cut the area in a while or they just didn't bother to cut around the older trees. Oaks are large hardwood, deciduous trees that don't normally produce its first great seed crop until 40 to 50 years. Oaks can grow in upland areas even to the lowland river areas. Not many people try to build on rivers anymore, so it has given oaks a chance to survive in that habitat.
