less than four years before WoW starts, the trolls were living in stranglethorn area, and the humans and the other troll tribes were warring, humans against all humans, trolls against trolls and humans, the tribe of playable trolls was kicked out and settled in the Echo Isles, but a medicine witch doctor's apprentice (Zalzazane that you kill in the quest) casted a spell that cursed the isles, and the Orcs let the troll tribe settle with them shortly before WoW playing starts in the game.
So it was a civil war that cast them out, and then a traitor that got them with the orcs.
