For an eclipse to occur the Sun, Moon and Earth must be in line. For a total eclipse the centers of each object must be all on the same line (a very special condition). If they are not, a partial eclipse will occur. The times that all 3 objects are aligned perfectly occur much less frequently than the partial alignment resulting in the partial eclipses. The related link below shows a nice diagram which will make this clearer.

What occurs more often- a partial solar eclipse or total solar eclipse?

Partial 35.3%Annular 33.2%Total 26.7%Hybrid 4.8% As you can see from the table above, partial eclipses are most common, followed by annular eclipses. Total solar eclipses are barely more than one-quarter of the total. Total eclipses occur when the Moon is close enough to the Earth for the umbra, the cone of total shadow, to hit the Earth. Annular eclipses occur when the Moon is so far away that the umbra does not reach all the way to the Earth. "Hybrid" eclipses occur when the Moon crosses the dividing line between total and annular DURING the eclipse, so that the eclipse begins as annular and changes to total, or vice versa, during the eclipse.

Why do most people think that lunar eclipses occur more often then a solar eclipses?

Because for any given point on Earth, lunar eclipses are visible more often than solar eclipses.

Where do solar eclipses happen the most?

near the equator

Which occurs more often a partial solar eclipse or a total solar eclipse?

A Partial Solar Eclipse will happen most often because it is more likely for part of the sun to be covered up by the moon than the whole moon covering the entire sun. Also you don't really hear about Total Eclipses do you ? Hope I Helped -David

The lunar and solar eclipse 1963?

In 1963, there were several lunar and solar eclipses. The lunar eclipses occurred on April 25th and October 18th, visible from various parts of the world. The solar eclipses took place on May 9th and November 2nd, and were visible in different regions as well.

Why are solar eclipse less common then patial solar eclipse?

I presume you are asking why Total Solar Eclipses are less common than Partial Solar Eclipses. The reason for this is that the moon's shadow does not completely cover the Earth when eclipsing the sun. It covers just a a narrow corridor across the Earth's surface. This mean's that when there is a total solar eclipse, you have to be in the right place at the right time on earth to see it. Whereas a much wider area of Earth will only witness a partial eclipse during the event. The moon also sometimes is slightly further away from the Earth during some solar eclipses (due to it's slightly elliptical orbit). The moon will look slightly smaller than the sun and this results in an Annular Solar Eclipse where the outer edges of the sun manage to shine around the moon creating a 'ring' effect. Annular solar eclipses are slghtly more common than Total Solar Eclipses. Partial Solar Eclipses are the most common in any one place on Earth.

How often will a solar eclipse happen in a year?

Most years, there are two solar eclipses. Some years, because of the precise geometry between the Sun, Earth and Moon, we have two partial eclipses instead of one total or annular eclipse. Very rarely, there are FOUR solar eclipses in one calendar year.Because each eclipse affects only a tiny area of the Earth, it is fairly rare for one location to experience two total solar eclipses in the same decade, and it isn't uncommon for there to be centuries between total solar eclipses for any specific spot on the Earth.

When is the eclipse movie premiere in London?

There was a partial solar eclipse on 2008-Aug-01, but you probably didn't notice. The last total solar eclipse was 1715-May-03. King George I probably enjoyed the show. There are generally two solar eclipses and two lunar eclipses each year. About half of those are partial. Total lunar eclipses seem to be more frequent, because it is visible from the entire dark side of the Earth, while solar eclipses cover a very narrow path across the Earth. The last total LUNAR eclipse in London (and western Europe and most of North America) was on February 21, 2008.

How many lunar eclipse does earth experience each year?

It varies. During the 100 years of the 20th Century (1901 - 2000), there were 228 solar eclipses and 229 lunar ones, for an average of about 2.3 per year. Any one year may have 2 - 5 of each.

What is the most common type of eclipse?

During the 20th Century, there were 228 solar eclipses and 229 lunar ones, which is about as equal as you can get. But lunar eclipses are visible over a wider area. So if you stay in one place, you're more likely to see lunar eclipses more often than solar ones.

How many solar eclipses will there be in 2012?

Where is the next solar eclipse going to happen?

"Next" is a moving target, and there are many kinds of eclipses. Today is Thursday, May 26, 2011, and the "next" solar eclipse will occur in 5 days, on June 1, 2011. It will be a partial eclipse, visible from northern Japan, Korea, northern China, most of Siberia, the northern half of Alaska and Canada, and Greenland. 2011 is a good year for eclipses! There will be two other solar eclipses (all partial, on July 1 and November 25) and two TOTAL lunar eclipses, on June 15 (visible from eastern Africa, India and southwestern Asia) and December 10 (visible from eastern Asia and Australia).
