Why are people afraid when they can't see?

I want you to imagine that you are blind and standing at a busy intersection that spans four lanes. You can hear the traffic, but you can't see the light when it turns red or green. The city where you live has decided that a bell at the light for blind people to know when to walk/stop is too expensive to put in. This is what people who are blind face everyday. You are walking down the street and can not see the hazards that are in front of you. Some one has put their trash can out for pick up but you don't know that it is there. What do you do ? You need to go to the second floor of a building but there is no elevator and have to use the stairs. What do you do ? This is some of the challenges that people who are blind face.
