If the mines are not properly ventilated the miners will breath dangerous levels of radon gas. If the miners are not provided proper clothing and masks they will ingest uranium dust. Both of these are likely to cause cancer decades later. If the miners are not properly decontaminated on leaving the mine, they can take home uranium dust which might be ingested by their families.
