Turkey is a secular state. But the religion of the people is Islam.
The two types of clergy were regular clergy and secular clergy. Regular clergy were those who were in monastic orders, and so were regulated by the rules of those orders; they included monks and abbots. Secular clergy were those who served the secular population; they were deacons, priests, and bishops serving the secular people, or people who were not clergy.
Deemed liberal or secular by whom? If they are openly liberal or secular in Iran the government would be bothered by it, and you might get arrested for it. However the Iranian PEOPLE do not care if someone is liberal or secular, in fact a lot of Iranians are very liberal and secular especially the ones living in big cities. Iranian society is very progressive and educated, so issues like whether somebody is liberal or secular are not something people are bothered by. I am an Iranian atheist born into a Muslim family but nobody has ever had a problem with this.
Many secular humanists are not as intolerant as religious people when it comes to different sexual orientations. Since secular humanists do not follow the religious teachings found in holy books, they are more likely to be tolerant of gay marriage and equal rights for people with different sexual orientations.

Secular music
Well back in that era people were Catholic or Chirstian. Not many were Secular (secular: of no or little faith). So if this is for a test, exam of assingment I would say 'People in that era were Catholic, Christian of Secular' but I wouldn't assume, as you will porbably get it wrong as it doensn't in the book what religion the boys were.Ciao :)
People became secular for various reasons, including a desire for freedom of thought and belief, disillusionment with religious institutions, increased emphasis on scientific reasoning, and a focus on individualism and personal autonomy. Additionally, factors such as education, exposure to diverse worldviews, and the push for separation of church and state have contributed to the rise of secularism.
