This means that they receive the least energy per unit area from the sun for two reasons. First, the sunlight strikes the ground at a low angle because the sun is low in the sky. Second, also because the sun is low in the sky, the sunlight must travel through more atmosphere to reach the ground.

Another factor, of course, is that in the winter points above the arctic or antarctic circle receive no sunlight at all. This, along with the points mentioned above, results in a build up of snow and ice which means the surface is white and reflects much of the sun's energy rather than absorbing it.
