Why are railway tracks smooth?

Train wheels rigidly fixed to an axle. Two wheelsets are mounted in a bogie (truck) to support the weight of the train. Since the suspension is extremely stiff to handle the train's weight they keep the wheels and rails smooth to reduce vibration and noise (as much as possible) The sheer weight alone provides enough traction.
