Most research stations are built near the coast, simply because of access. It's easier to transport supplies for building and maintaining the station from ships than it is from other modes of transport.

The interior of Antarctica is home to several research stations. Vostok Station was built and is maintained by the Russian expeditions that drive over the ice from Mirny or Progress, both of which research stations are located on the coast.

The South Pole Station, a US research station, is served by irregular air transport, based on the vagaries of weather in both the point of origin and at the pole.
