The term "Shepherd" was often used by Christ to represent himself as being the shepherd of His flock. It was the shepherds responsibility to look after his flock and to teach them who was the master, to obey his voice (words) so that they would be kept save from ravaging animals (The ways of the world). He knew each of his charges as they knew his voice when he called. He would gather them (us) as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings.
