Low tone air horns penetrate better through windows, fog etc. High tones are very noticeable but do not travel or penetrate well.
It is illegal to use any type of horn that emits more than one tone, unless the tones are simultaneous. There are no exceptions. Emergency vehicles on route are an exception.
An air horn is simply a canister of compressed air, which at the press of a button realeses some of the air into a nozzle. When air passes through the nozzle, a sound is emitted. (like a trumpet)

Most car horns are electronically operated - and Class 7/8 trucks have them, as well.. they're called a "city horn". An air horn is simply air operated, and the tone is emitting through the passing of air at a high velocity. It's similar to blowing over the top of empty glass bottles.
Air horns typically require a minimum of 60-120 PSI (pounds per square inch) of air pressure to produce a loud sound. The exact amount can vary depending on the specific air horn model.
Besides a car horn, horns can be found in various musical instruments, such as trumpets and French horns, which produce sound through the vibration of air. Additionally, animal horns, like those of cows or goats, are often used for decorative purposes or as tools. In some cultures, horns from animals are utilized as drinking vessels or for ceremonial purposes.
Train air horns can range in price from around $50 to several hundred dollars, depending on factors like size, material, and manufacturer. Basic models suitable for cars or trucks typically start at the lower end, while higher-quality or larger train horns designed for commercial use can be more expensive. Specialty or premium models may even exceed $1,000. Always check for specifications and compatibility before purchasing.
