Why are some beliefs fundamental?

Because they are at the lowest level of belief required.

I may believe my wife is tall, others may disagree

I may believe my wife is beautiful, others may disagree

I may believe my wife is talented, others may disagree.

But, if we don't all believe my wife is a woman then we have problems.

Similarly with religious beliefs....

It is a fundamental belief of Christianity that Jesus was the Son of God. If people don;t believe that, then whatever else they may be, they are not what is generally accepted as Christian.
