It is the presence of the pigment melanin that is responsible for yellow coloring in butterflies (Lepidopteraorder).
Specifically, the activation of melanin results in brown or yellow coloring in butterflies. Other colors are due to the predominant presence of other pigments. For example, anthocyanin is responsible for blue, purple or red. As is the case with plants, chlorophyll is responsible for green-colored butterflies.
There are several green butterflies. In Florida, Malachites are green. Cloudless Sulphur butterflies are normally considered yellow but some have a shade of green.

Yellow pansy butterflies and American goldfinches differ significantly in taxonomy and characteristics. Yellow pansy butterflies are insects belonging to the family Nymphalidae, known for their vibrant yellow and black wing patterns, while American goldfinches are birds from the finch family, recognized for their bright yellow plumage and distinctive conical beaks. Additionally, their habitats and behaviors vary, with butterflies often found in gardens and meadows, whereas goldfinches are commonly seen in open fields and shrubs, feeding on seeds.
