Why are some mud crabs empty?

Crabs have a shell (actually a carapace) that is solid and rigid and it doesn't grow with the crab so every so often then split it open and crawl out of it to grow a slightly bigger one. What you are finding then are the empty discarded carapaces of growing crabs.
