Why are spark plugs shortened?

The shorter the better. Often they're shortened because there is way too much wire and it droops down pretty far possibly causing a fire harzard with the headers. Another reason is that the shorter the wire, the less distance the electrical current has to travel, and the less power robbing resistance it encounters. So the shorter the wires, the better the spark. More or less, that is, as spark plug wire diameter will also effect this as well as the spark plug itself.
