Some species are hunted for meat, fur, or hides. Others are hunted because people think that their body parts such as horns have medicinal properties.

Hunting if controlled is good at keeping some animal populations in check. Over population by a species can cause huge problems with other species, if they eat all the food. But over hunting can also cause problems within a species. Governments try to control hunting though licencing, hunting seasons and regulations
Hunting is a form of "harvesting" of certain species by other species, having a net effect of reducing the impact of one species (those killed) by increasing the impact by others. Others are of the opinion that: Hunting doesn't benefit the environment.
Any species of animal that eats meat has been hunting as long as that species has been around. That is MUCH older than the written word, and older than man as a species- so there are no records.
