Because paper comes in rectangles. Using square stamps reduces paper waste. That makes them cheaper to make. And printing equipment is all set up to handle rectangular sheets of paper. Creating perforations for anything other than in square formats takes more time and costs more.

How many stamps are not on the border of a ten by ten sheet of 100 stamps?

In a 10 by 10 sheet of stamps, the stamps on the border form a square around the edges. The border includes the first and last rows and columns, totaling 40 stamps (10 from the top row, 10 from the bottom row, and 10 from each side, minus the corners). Therefore, the number of stamps not on the border is 100 total stamps minus 40 border stamps, which equals 60 stamps.

How many postage stamps would be required to cover a football field?

First, determine the area of a football field. Remember that the end zones are part of the area. Second, determine the area of a stamp. Third, make sure your units are the same. You will have to convert from square yards to square inches or from square inches to square yards. Last, divide the area of the football field by the area of the stamp. The result is the number of stamps required to cover the field. The area of any rectangle is the product of its length and width: A = l x w. There are 144 square inches per square foot, and nine square feet per square yard.
