NYU's essential doesn't have a campus. Well, technically NYC is NYU's campus. NYU doesn't have a closed off campus for its students, instead buildings are located all around the East Village and students have to interact with "normal" happenings of everyday NYC life. However the central focus of NYU's campus and most of NYU's building are around Washington Square Park and the surrounding area. Student wise NYU has about 60,000 students including both graduate and Undergraduate students.
UCLA is a commuter school because not all of its thousands and thousands of students live around the campus. You can also think of it this way: If the majority of the students live around a mile from the school's campus then it is residential. If on the other hand, students live further away from school and need to take buses or other forms of transportaion to get to the campus, then it is commuter.
