It is a celebration of the Polish resistance against the Nazis, which ultimately failed after 63 days of fighting, because the Soviets did not advance as far as the Resistance expected, and the Soviets would not cooperate with British and US forces that were airdropping supplies. Some believe that the Soviets purposely allowed the Polish forces to be crushed and the city to be destroyed.
Polish people regularly celebrate the anniversary of the Warsaw uprising. They start on the same day and hour as the actual event every year and celebrate with flags and flares and smoke. It is a country-wide celebration, much like the 4th of July in the US.

Obviously, they did not stand a chance against the SS, but at least they went down fighting.
