Jesus' words start, in verse 3, with the words "Blessed are", which in Latin are "beati ...."; this forms a refrain "beati pauperes spiritu"... "beati mites quoniam"... each starting with "beati", thus, the "beati-tudes".

The Bible was of course not written in Latin - and it would be more appropriate to look at the Greek original and call it the makaritudes!
