Why are the bones in your toes shorter and fatter than the bones in your fingers?

Have you placed your fingers next to your toes lately? The pollax[thumb] and the hallux[big toe] are both lacking the medial phalanges, the rest all have distal, medial and proximal, but phalanges of the foot bear considerable weight & are, therefore, larger.
