Amsterdam is really old and when Amsterdam was build it was build as a village for storage and to house people that worked in the port.

To get as much houses and storage buildings into the city they where build long but narrow.

If you look at some old pictures you can see little canals running through the city and next to these canals are houses with a piece of wood extanding from the house with a pully on the end. This was so you could easily get your stuff off a boat and in your storage.

In other cities in the Netherlands the houses aren't so narrow.
