The primary reason was because the dragon Smaug had hoarded all the treasure of Dale into the mountain along with the dwarven treasure. Additionally, the men suffered the wrath of the Dragon despite doing nothing to provoke him. They felt some restitution, at least enough to rebuild, was in order.

Tolkien's hobbit characters can only be found in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Some discussion of them can be found in his History of Middle Earth books, basically they are notes about the writing and creation of Middle Earth.

JRR Tolkien is not in The Hobbit, he is the author of the book. He does a bit of narration in some places, a sort of aside. Tolkien is English and was born in South Africa.
The second edition of The Hobbit was published in 1951. It made some small adjustments to the story of the Riddle Game, but changed little overall.
