They are made for adults to play. The graphic content looks more real now and that makes the games get ratings that are for adult. They are not worried about losing fans the sales are better than any video game ever so they are gaining more fans than they are losing. You'll be three years older than when COD4 was released. Maybe you just switched from the teen rated World at War Final Fronts PS2 game to a PS3 console. If you want a Teen rated game you can always play the Nintendo DS
All first person shooters need to be realistic in order to be sold. They are all rated the same. You can not shoot someone realistically and not have blood and gore. Once the game is rated mature for one feature they need to make sure the game is designed for that audience. So they have strong language in the game and online communication. In the USA the games are 17 and not 18
Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare was also rated Mature and you are wrong. They never lost any fan base. Since the release of that game as a Mature the Fan Base has grow more than any other game ever. They expect first day sales for MW3 to be even higher than the record breaking One day sales of Black Ops
