Sun Light consists of seven prime colours, e.g, violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red. Whenever light passes through air or water the particles of these media disperses the components of the light. The degree of dispersion of different components are different. The first three components disperse more and last three components disperse less. The dispersed components are spread in the medium. In this case when sun light passes through sea or ocean water the violet, indigo, blue components are spread in the water and hence the water appears to be blue.
Oceans and seas are blue because the water in them reflects the other colors and absorbs the color blue at the surface.as you descend, however, the color of the water changes.
