They have no natural enemies on the Galapagos Islands and they live for hundreds of years. Evidently, the environment is ideal for them. They have plenty of food and they don't get sick. And their genes allow them to grow very large.

This might not be a fun fact but..... in the galapagos islands, on 1 island the ground is really dry so the turtles have to get their food from high up. They have evovled(sp?) to have their shell with a lip at the top so that they can reach up better.
