There is only one official nick name for North Dakota which was chosen by the North Dakota state legislature in 1957 and that is "The Peace Garden State".

The "Flickertail State" was defeated by the North Dakota State Senate when it was proposed to be an emblem for North Dakota.

The "Roughrider State" was used as a tourism promotion.
