Because a man will come and fill those gaps by holding your hands...
If you mean gaps when your fingers are together, that just means your fingers are crooked or that your finger joints are large. If you mean the spaces when they are open, then your fingers would be useless with them.
because if there weren't spaces it would be harder to pick stuff up plus it would look weird
because with a gap your thumb would not be apposible it would stay in one place and we would not be able to grip anything.
A Glove!
The thumb on the human hand has only two phalanges, or joints, whereas human fingers each have 3 phalanges. This give the thumb greater movement and enables it to do things the fingers can't do. Collectively the fingers and thumbs are known as digits. The thumb is said to be opposable to the fingers. By definition, the thumb is both a finger and not a finger. "Finger" can mean any of the four digits besides the thumb OR any digit including the thumb. It is up to the person to decide whether or not the thumb is considered a finger.
The average human has 10 fingers. For the sake of pedantry, a thumb is a specialised finger.
To be pedantic: on one human hand there are four fingers and one thumb. But commonly it is five fingers.
four...a thumb is not a finger
1. K - the shape of a rabbit with your fingers (a V with the first 2 fingers and the middle one slightly forward) 2. A - a fist with the thumb on the side 3. T - a fist with the thumb stuck in between the index and middle fingers 4. E - a fist with just the 4 fingers; place the thumb so that the fingernails of the 4 fingers are touch the top of the thumb

A Glove!
What has four fingers and a thumb, but is not alive, is a popular riddle. The answer is a glove.

No, We Only Have Four Fingers And A Thumb.
10 fingers are not necessary...but the most important is the thumb
One way is to spell it out. For the T, you just put your thumb in between your first and second fingers and then put all of your finger down. For the I, you just put up your pinky. For the M, you put your thumb in between your ring finger and pinky and then put all your fingers down. For E, you just put every finger down other than your thumb and then you simply place your thumb under your fingers but make sure your thumb is still visible.
