Hardback books can be considered the first books, not the first written records, but the first books. Printing was originally done by hand, by learned men, usually priests. Books took a very long time to create and were very expensive. To protect these valuable pages, a hard cover was placed over the paper, often being stitched to the paper (which was partially made of cloth). Hardback books are designed to last for years and to be a small status symbol, informing others you value literature.
In contrast, paperback books were created to be cheap and light. The binding are glued instead of stitched. The idea was to bring reading to the masses. People could put the books in suit pockets, saddle bags and backpacks without adding additional weight. Some of the cheapest were "dime novels." Literally costing a dime, these books were made to be read, treated rough and thrown away when the pages fell apart. They were popular with travelers and men who did hard dirty work outdoors.
Why are there hardback books? So they will last a long time.
