The island of Jersey itself is the largest Channel Island. Although there is another large island commonly referred to as part of the Channel Islands, it actually is not a part of it.
Three large animal species found in the Channel Islands include the California sea lion, which is often seen basking on rocks, the island fox, a small but significant species endemic to the islands, and the gray whale, which migrates along the coast and can be spotted in surrounding waters. These species contribute to the unique biodiversity of the Channel Islands ecosystem.

It is believed that all of the northern islands were linked together. When the Continental ice sheets melted, all the islands were separated.
