Cultures of many areas of the world need explanation on why things happen and how things happen so out of security they design these gods. Like many theisms, gods are used more like a crutch. Instead of believing in one self to do the tasks at hand they put faith into something that is beyond them. Sometimes religion is used as a way to control everyone. Hope is generally what drives the human existence to be more than they are. The real question to ask is why do people need religion to function. They truly don't but for arguments sake, it is best that they believe in something if they cannot believe in themselves.
