The differences and similarities are so vast you need to be specific in your question. There is far too much information to impart without knowing what you specifically are looking for in an answer. Do you want genetics, predisposition, behaviors??? Basically women are the nurturers, caregivers. Most serial killers are white, male, between the ages of 25-35, never married, served in the military, government workers. There are only a handful of women who qualify as "serials". Look up Wournos. She had reasons - valid in her own mind.u

Men and women are 'wired' differently, nobody can deny that. And I think that's the best way to describe the mind set of these killers of different sex. For men, almost without exception, sex is caught up in it somewhere. They somehow in their earlier, formative years started to associate pain and sex. But above all else, for men it's the power. They want to feel like God. And for a very brief time they do. Then reality sets in. History tells us that there have been male serial killers that do not rape their victims in the normal sense of the word. But their crimes are sexual in nature. The 'Son of Sam' killer that terriorized New York City in the 1970's never raped any of the victims, some of which were men. But David Berkowitz did get a sexual thrill from killing people at random.

Female serial kills are coming from a different place altogether. Their reasons for killing are almost never about sex. Money and financial gain are big motivators for women. And there are some that like the power. Females tend to be less violent and are more likely to be poisoners. And of course there are always exceptions. Aileen Carol Wuornos killed with a hand gun. But despite what has been said about her, her crimes where not sexually motivated, they were about robbery. They had what she wanted, so she took it. One of the biggest differences is men kill strangers and women usually kill people they know, Wuornos did not know her victims .

Because it takes a lot more to anger a woman. The woman is much more calmer than the man, and therefor is not likely to be angered by something which would usually anger a man. A man's anger span is much greater than a woman's, and men respond to negativities in a much more aggressive way. It is completely natural, and relates to the hormones, but this does not make men more dangerous in every day life.

Men far outnumber women in serial killing. And they usually (I say usually because there are always exceptions) kill for different reasons. Women serial killers are more likely to kill someone they know, caregivers, even mothers that kill family members one at a time for insurance money. "Angels of Mercy" nurses giving patients overdoses of medications.

The serial killer Aileen Wuornos was given the dubious title of 'first female' serial killer. She was neither the first or most unique female serial killer. Wuornos, who killed 7 men in Florida in the 1980's was more typical than most want to believe. She killed for gain. She needed money and a car. Where most of us would get a job, she got her gun and took what she wanted. It's true that she did not know her victims, but for the rest, she was not particularly special.

Why are there more than females in a serial killer?

I'm not sure if I understand the question but most serial killers are men. More females are victims of serial killers because they are weaker than most men and prostitutes are easier to get as they climb in strangers cars.

How rare are women serial murderers?

Although not as plentiful as male serial killers, history shows that women are not immune to killing in numbers. The biggest difference in men and women serial killers is the how and why of their crimes. Male serial killers are a whole different animal and are driven by completely different forces. For men its about control, sex, control. They are usually driven by strong violent fantasies. And they are usually strangers or near strangers to the victims. Women serial killers are most likely to kill someone they know. Nurses kill their patients for varying reasons. They kill relatives for monetary gain. This is not the complete list but it gives a good idea of how a woman kills. They are big on poison, too. Then there are the women, rare though they are, that kill their children. Not Andrea Yates, the Texas housewife that drowned her 5 small children in their bathtub. The women that suffer from Muchausen's by Proxy. These women kill their own children for the attention it brings them. Although Aileen Wuornos has been touted as the first female serial killer, she was far from it. What made Wuornos non-typical was she killed men she did not know. But it was about monetary gain. So except for the stranger/victims she was more typical than people realize. They had what she wanted/needed so she took it. (money, car) These are just examples, and of course there are always exceptions to the rules but this gives a good idea of women killers.

Are serial killers actually real?

If you're talking about famous serial killers in movies like Hannibal Lecter and Michael Myers, then no. If you're talking about serial killers in real life, then yes. For example, Jeffrey Dahmer killed seventeen men and boys between the years of 1978 and 1991. For another example, Ed Gein murdered two people in a timespan between 1954 and 1957. Those are actual serial killers who committed actual murders. Movie killers are based on fiction and did not actually kill people in real life.

Women serial killers?

Serial killers are not described by number of kills, rather, by the method and psychological factors that went into the kills. For example, ssgt. Giunta in afganastan killed between 9& 13 people in a 20min. period of time. By your definition, we should have him executed. Instead we gave him the congressional medal of honor. Son of Sam killed the same number of people but he was a serial killer. Most female serial killers are suffering from munchousen by proxy. The others are in almost always involved with male serial killers, or they kill men who remind them of their male abusers. Women make up approximately 51% of the earths population, they represent less then half of that percentile in murders. And less then half that percentile of serial killers. At any given time there are approximately 300 serial killers operating in the USA. Statistically speaking, only, about 10 of those are women. Almost all serial killers are are white males between 18&45 So most serial killer profiles begin with that group of people. That is unless the victims are children or men that died of poisoning or genital mutilation. //Female serial killers comprise only 8% of all American serial killers. Furthermore, American female serial killers comprise 76% of female serial killers world-wide. The total for female serial killers is around 62 to 65. Contrary to the above information, Munchausen by proxy is one of the rarest conditions and makes up only a small percentage of total female serial killers. The FBI estimates that at any given time there may be up to 50 active serial killers.//

What is the percentage of female killers in America?

We only have 86 female killers from the US. Is a rare thing when a female serial killer comes up. Female serial killers tend to murder men for material gain. The an analysis of the 86 female serial killers from the U.S., tells us that the victims tended to be spouses, children or the elderly. The prefered method for killing is poison but this is not the only method. Shootings (used by 20%), suffocation (16%), stabbing (11%), and drowning (5%) were used by female serial killers. Aileen Wuornos is a totally different female serial killer. She killed strangers instead of friends or family away from home.
